Dr. Trevor Cates, ND

More Than Skin Deep: A Dermatological Perspective

The skin is often an outer reflection of internal conditions, including autoimmunity. Vitiligo, psoriasis, and alopecia areata can be found in patients with autoimmune issues. Other autoimmune conditions such as Lupus, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Addison’s disease can manifest signs on the skin. With these and other autoimmune issues, imbalances are occurring both internally and externally in the skin. Immunological as well as microbiota changes impact autoimmunity in dermatology. In this presentation, we will discuss dermatologic conditions associated with autoimmune diseases, how skin microbiota are involved in autoimmunity, and an integrative approach to restore balance and address dermatologic conditions associated with autoimmunity.

At the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to confidently:
  • Review common dermatologic conditions associated with autoimmune diseases.
  • Discover how skin microbiota are involved in autoimmunity and conditions (external and internal) in which the skin microbiota become disrupted.
  • Learn how to use an integrative approach to restore host-microbiota homeostasis and address autoimmunity in dermatology.

Dr. Andrea Gruszecki, ND

Forces of Nature: Environmental Stressors and the Incidence of Multiple Sclerosis

The incidence of multiple sclerosis (MS) in the United States continues to rise each decade. A variety of factors, including environmental exposures (chemical, metals), psychological distress, and genetics may contribute to the induction or progression of MS.  Sun-belt countries have a very low risk of MS, yet the incidence of MS has recently increased three-fold in Iran over a 20-year period. Factors that may increase the risk of MS will be explored through the lens of this “living laboratory”. Few effective therapies have been available for MS patients until recently, when human trials using estriol and other hormones demonstrated positive, neuroprotective results. The assessment of hormone status and the use of nutritional, mind-body and hormone therapies for MS will be reviewed.

At the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to confidently:
  • Recall known multiple sclerosis (MS) risk factors and apply this to their patients.
  • Understand the interaction of generational and transgenerational epigenetic exposures, nutrition and inherited variations.
  • Use evidence-based therapeutic interventions such as estriol and nutrition, to manage MS patients.
Biography
Andrea Gruszecki, ND received her B.A. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Connecticut, where she was exposed to a variety of research projects; her own research project examined the effects of diurnal cycles on Poeciliopsis species. Trained as a Radiologic Technologist and Army medic, she spent the years prior to graduation working in urgent care and hospital settings, gaining valuable clinical experience. She received her Doctorate in Naturopathy from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine.

Her experiences in private practice evolved into an inclusive model of medicine for use by conventional and CAM providers, designed to allow cross-specialty communication among health care providers. This model has been published online (Forward into the Past: Reclaiming Our Roots Through an Inclusive Model of Medicine NDNR eNewsletter June 2013).

Dr Gruszecki is a member of the Consulting Department at Meridian Valley Laboratory, where provides interpretive assistance with laboratory results, write interpretations and creates conference presentations.  She is expanding her knowledge of hormones and hormone metabolites, and brings her expertise in urinary neurotransmitters, toxic metals and methylation pathways to the interpretation of MVL laboratory results.

Dr. Todd Born, ND, CNS

Tired of Being Tired: A Route to Resolution of CF

Autoimmunity is an immune response directed against an antigen normally present within the body of the host.  The disease is a pathologic condition caused by a specific adaptive autoimmune response.  This presentation will cover the most common autoimmune diseases, by body system, epidemiology, as well as what they have in common.  Dr. Born will thoroughly cover simple, yet effective treatment strategies and specifics to optimize patient outcomes.

At the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to confidently:

  • Understand clinical presentation of autoimmune diseases.
  • Understand conventional and more expanded diagnostic workup, to ascertain more precise targets for therapy.
  • Understand what all the various autoimmune diseases have in common?
  • Be able to implement conventional and naturopathic interventions, which are evidence and clinically based, to alleviate symptoms and treat the patient.

Dr. Leslie Axelrod, ND, LAc

A Pain in the Joints: Naturopathic Approach to Rheumatology

One of the most common types of conditions that naturopathic doctors see are rheumatological conditions. Therefore it is imperative that NDs know how to successfully diagnose with labs and imaging, interpret these findings, prevent these conditions if there is a family history or predisposition, support the body while it heals, and monitor the symptoms. In this presentation, Dr. Axelrod will discuss how to order and interpret diagnostic tools in common autoimmune conditions. She will also discuss the management of patients on conventional medications, including steroid use and weaning. Finally, she will discuss naturopathic therapeutics, clinical updates, & cases.

At the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to confidently:
  • Be able to order and interpret appropriate diagnostics to differentiate and monitor common autoimmune conditions including RA, SLE and Psoriatic Arthritis.
  • Be able to objectively assess level of inflammation, prognosis, and efficacy of treatment.
  • Be able to design a therapeutic plan for patients who are on allopathic medications, including addressing side effects and weaning schedules (especially steroids).
  • Be able to formulate a naturopathic therapeutic plan for autoimmune patients.
Biography
Dr. Axelrod is a Naturopathic physician and acupuncturist. She is a Professor of Clinical Sciences at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Arizona where she teaches rheumatology. She has been in private for thirty-one years, with the last twenty years in an integrative rheumatology practice.  Her published works include: chapters on Fibromyalgia in the Australian texts, Clinical Naturopathy: An Evidence-based Guide to Practice, and Clinical Naturopathy in Practice, Elsevier, Australia.  She was a co-author of “Efficacy of methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) in osteoarthritis pain of the knee: a pilot clinical trial.” Osteoarthritis Cartilage. In addition, she has written multiple articles in NDNR including Using Zusanli St 36 to treat autoimmune disease and treating autoimmune disease using naturopathic principles.

Dr. Leah Hollon, ND, MPH

Drain the Swamp: Unraveling Complex AI Cases

What if we are adding to the swamp of autoimmune disease without knowing it? Even though it is known that autoimmune disease impacts mainly women, where the TH1/TH2 balance becomes more compromised, could there be additional interactive forces and sediment that we are unaware of? What specific clues serve as indicators to possibly prevent against some of the rarest and/or debilitating autoimmune diseases? Within this session we will discuss common yet often unapproached biochemical and epigenetic factors that serve as early warning signals for our patients. Where, if ignored could lead to a further muddy mirage. We will compare and contrast specific AID including Guillian-Barre, Sjogren’s, POTS, ankylosing spondylitis, RA and MS. Within these diseases, similar mechanisms exist and thus having short and long-term targeted support is imperative for stability and healing.  Current supportive literature and research will be shared to provide insight and therapy for AID through pharmacotherapy, pharmacognosy, homeopathy, nutrition, and lifestyle support.  The session will consist of lecture and case-based learning.

At the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to confidently
  • Provide at least two specific pathophysiological changes that occur related to phase II detoxification for those with AID.
  • List two genetic variant enzymes that play a role in methylation changes that has been linked to multiple AIDs.
  • Choose at least three therapies (pharmacy, botanical, or lifestyle support) from the cases provided that address short and long-term management for AID.

Dr. Mona Morstein, ND

Sugar Rush: Type 1 Diabetes in the Pediatric Population

Approximately 18,000 pediatric patients are diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes each year, and the incidence rates are increasing in the US and world-wide.  Being able to give excellent diabetes care to pediatric patients is a real service to the children and their parents.  Conventional care is problematic: it considers T1DM pediatric patients to be adequately controlled if their A1C is <8.0%, and the axiom of eating whatever they wish and covering it with insulin—a failed, frustrating and dangerous method of care—is still their leading treatment paradigm. Naturopathic medicine can effectively bridge this gap. In this lecture, Dr. Mona Morstein will lead attendees through several key areas of concern in treating T1DM pediatrics patients.

At the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to confidently:
  • Understand the etiological factors associated with developing pediatric T1DM.
  • Understand how to work up a pediatric T1DM pediatric patient.
  • Know how to use diet and supplements in care of T1DM pediatric patients.
  • Know how to start and adjust insulin in care of T1DM pediatric patients.
  • Know the technology regularly used in care of T1DM pediatric patients.
Biography
Dr. Mona Morstein has been treating all types of diabetic patients for 25 years, and is considered an expert on the condition.  She is a regular lecturer on diabetes, and has repeatedly been asked to teach her highly praised two day seminars:  Naturopathic Care of Diabetic Patients, and her Insulin Intensive Seminar. Dr. Morstein is the author of “Master Your Diabetes: A Comprehensive, Integrative Approach For Both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes.”  She is the Founder and Executive Director of the Low Carb Diabetes Association, a 501c3 non-profit designed to educate people about using naturopathic medicine to treat Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.  She is the formulator of “Diamend”, from Priority One, the most comprehensive diabetes product on the market.  Dr. Morstein is an engaging and dynamic speaker and loves passing on her knowledge to hope stimulate other naturopathic physicians to also specialize in diabetes.

Dr. Eric Udell, ND

Like Cures Like: The Role of Homeopathy in Autoimmune Disease

This presentation will provide attendees with a practical guide to effectively using homœopathy in the treatment of AID. Dr. Udell will provide an overview of the major issues involved in the homœopathic treatment of AID patients, including a review of the evidence, prescribing principles, case management, the concurrent use of conventional medical therapies, and the utilization of complementary naturopathic therapies.

At the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to confidently:
  • Explain the potential benefits and limitations of homœopathy in the treatment of autoimmune diseases.
  • Explain the defining and guiding principle of homœopathy and how it is applied in the treatment of autoimmune diseases.
  • Explain the key principles of managing autoimmune cases homœopathically.
  • Explain the role of conventional medications in autoimmune cases treated homœopathically.
  • Explain the role of complementary therapies in autoimmune cases treated homœopathically.
Biography:

Dr. Udell is recognized as an expert in Homœopathy and for his willingness to tackle difficult and complex cases. Early in practice, Dr. Udell worked with a severely ill woman battling Systemic Lupus who made a dramatic and complete recovery. This experience illustrated the transformative potential of homœopathy in the treatment of autoimmune diseases and inspired Dr. Udell to dedicate himself to help these patients. A few years later, his interest turned personal when he developed post-Streptococcal Psoriasis, which resolved through homœopathic treatment and deepened his compassion for autoimmune patients.

Dr. Udell is a 2002 graduate of Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine (SCNM), where he completed residency training followed by a two-year post-doctoral fellowship in Homeopathy—the first fellowship of its kind in the United States—under the tutelage of Dr. Stephen Messer. He is the Medical Director at Arizona Natural Health Center in Phoenix, Arizona and a board member of the Homeopathic Academy of Naturopathic Physicians (HANP).

In 2005 Dr. Udell traveled to Sri Lanka with the humanitarian organization, Homeopaths Without Borders, where he treated survivors of the tsunami that devastated South Asia. He has also donated his time and expertise to Arizona’s underserved communities.
