PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION

Eczema is a multifactorial, chronic inflammatory skin condition that affects both pediatric and adult populations. While conventional treatments like topical corticosteroids remain helpful tools, there is increasing evidence for integrative strategies that address underlying microbiome imbalances in both the skin and gut.

This presentation will explore the shifts in the skin microbiome during flares and relative to healthy skin and examine the link between gut dysbiosis and eczema.

After a brief overview on this microbiome-related pathophysiology, this session will move to emphasize practical, evidence-based interventions. Attendees will gain clinical tools to support the skin barrier through topical ingredients and lifestyle interventions known to support the skin microbiome and decrease the severity of itch and eczema. To address gut health, a special focus will be given to dysbiosis observed at the level of the gut, and the role of various supplements and dietary recommendations to address dysbiosis and improve skin outcomes in patients with eczema.

    1. Compare the skin microbiome and gut microbiome in eczema relative to healthy control.

    2. Identify evidence-based topical and lifestyle interventions that support the skin microbiome.

    3. Discuss oral probiotics, food sources, and dietary supplements and their effect on the gut microbiome in eczema.

  • Dr. Jessica Maloh is a Naturopathic Doctor working in the realm of integrative dermatology and has held a position as a Postdoctoral Research Scholar in the Department of Dermatology at UC Davis.
